ENGAGEMENT: The Importation of American Technology
American medical technology, such as the latest models of electrocardiographs and X-ray units, were both sought by the USC and their Polish interlocutors as necessary instruments to Polish aid. There were permanent installation that could "help people help themselves," equipment that could not be obtained in measures other than through an American agency. Equipment, unlike supplies, are large pieces of capital - here we may note the irony that these were sought by Communist politicians - and are more expensive, take longer to procure, and require specialists to operate. Here we see various hospital instruments being imported into Poland, to replace the older ones that were pilfered during successive German and Russian occupation. This was the primary objective the USC Polish Medical Mission.
